Breed Profile

Adult male Great Danes are among the tallest domestic dogs. The breed was originally bred to hunt wold boar in Germany. Modern Great Danes have been enhanced and streamlined to suit the aesthetic demands of the show ring. As with many very large breeds, they may be relatively short lived (6 to 8 years). They are rather susceptable to bloat and torsion, related, potentially fatal gastro-intestinal problems whose origin and prevention are poorly understood.

They are alert protectors of the home. They are quite loyal and loving to their owners. They are a breed that requires careful maintainance and adequate housing. This breed needs interaction with their human family and good husbandry. It is not a breed that can be left in the back yard and ignored.
